Welcome back! As I’m finishing edits on this, Star Wars day is the top trend on social media so, #MaytheFourthbewithyou. The Yoda quote feels like a fun intro our next step in champion choices.
Last week we talked about accountability, based on some of the keys to success from Tom Ricketts, owner of the Chicago Cubs. This week, we’ll continue with the next piece on his list: Adaptability.
A key to being a successful entrepreneur is being ready to adapt as business evolves in the 21st-century. Technology changes quickly from smart phones to tablets, to the latest apps to communicate and share our latest ideas. Entrepreneurs can stand out by being open to these changes and curious about how they will work well for their personal and professional brand.

Look back at your ideas and check in to see how you are feeling. Knowing your reason for choosing a goal is so important. Are you known for fierce fashion? For sharing inspiring photos? Or finding the best new restaurant on the block? Once you have your “why I want to do this” you build a solid foundation so you can adapt to find the best path.
The best entrepreneurs are open to fresh ideas, ready to handle what comes next and flexible enough to work through challenges that pop up.
Welcome the unexpected
Those who are rigid in their thinking and doing can to get overwhelmed and stressed out when facing a surprise move or pressing projects. Be ready. Taking on important tasks and clients shows you’re a adaptable and a good investment. We don’t want clients or colleagues to take advantage of our enthusiasm. Take a moment to breathe and then remember the big picture: being open to surprises offers us a good chance to stand out and shine. When we help others through a tough spot, they may be more open when we need a boost or some help as well.
Offer Diplomatic Solutions
Being adaptable means we’re ready to be flexible when our recommendation or preferred solution doesn’t go over well. Diplomacy is a crucial skill for entrepreneurs in any line of business. Here being flexible and diplomatic involves preparing backup and several options for discussion.
Know why you made your first suggestion and be ready to explain why it works. Then be ready with a range of ideas. Multiple options and showing acceptance when your primary choice is rejected helps you come across as a professional who has the client’s best interest at stake. In pitching to a client, conveying alternate ideas and solutions can produce more business and deliver better results.
Keep your cool and confidence
You know what you’re doing. Remember, once you’re grounded in your why you can adapt to the conditions that come up. Your initial reaction to feedback, a dilemma or an unexpected event shows your adaptability. Show your best side by keeping your calm and remaining poised. This strong stance and confidence helps you make a smart decision when faced with a challenge. The ability to adapt in this way is especially important for entrepreneurs and leaders who set the tone for their new client and team. Confident leaders who show a balance of calm and adaptability tend to pass on these traits to others.

I will always want to satisfy my clients my own way and things weren’t working at all. Not until I finally learnt to be flexible enough to yield to their own new and creative ideas.
